Vânătoarea lui Buteanu stands at 2,507 metres and is one of the most accessible peaks above 2,500 m in the Făgăraș Mountains — because you set off straight from Bâlea Lake, which is already at 2,030 metres. The height gain that is left is small; the difficulty comes from the terrain and the weather, not from the climb.

The path climbs out of the Bâlea glacial cirque towards the ridge, then follows the ridgeline to the summit. The markings are clearly visible in good weather, but in fog it becomes hard to find your way — and the fog comes in fast.
What you need to have with you
- Boots with a good sole. There are scree sections where trainers slip.
- Layered clothing and something waterproof. The wind blows on the ridge even on clear days.
- Water and food. There is nowhere to stock up along the route.
- A forecast checked that same morning. Afternoon storms are frequent in summer.
- An early start. Ideally you want to be on the summit before midday and back down by around 16:00.
It is not a technical route, but it is a ridge route at over 2,500 metres. If this is your first alpine hike, go with someone who knows the area.
A good base for hiking in the Făgăraș Mountains
Ridge routes call for an early start. From Albota it is about an hour’s drive to Bâlea, which means you can leave at 6 in the morning without getting up in the middle of the night. And in the evening, after eight hours in the mountains, a hot meal and a sauna are waiting for you.
